And it’s Friday! Busy, busy times are upon us. Here are Five Links to get you through the weekend. Enjoy!
1. One of the
creepiest funnest about being a writer is that you can use it as an excuse to people watch. Here’s a great post by Lauren Mayhew with some tips on using people watching for character inspiration.
2. We all want to make a living writing. But can we? According to Jeff Going, Yes, You Can Make a Living Writing.
3. Having trouble writing conflict? Here is a post by Diane Michaels with some tips: Conflicted
4. Angela Quarles looks at Producing Your Books in Audio at Fiction University and asks “Should you?”
5. And let’s close with Four Writing Lessons From Natasha Trethewey by Emily Deibler. Good stuff!
Finally, if you’re in Nebraska this weekend and into Science Fiction and gaming, check out ConStellation 8 in Lincoln. I’ll be helping staff the Nebraska Writers Guild table and will also be on the following panels:
Friday 6:00 – What Makes Horror Work?
Telling a scary story takes a lot more than putting a mask on a madman and giving him a knife. This panel discussion will look at a few of the things that make great horror, as well as some of the tropes that we’ve seen a million times that new writers should avoid.
Saturday 12:00 – How to NOT Get Published
The publishing industry has dozens of “unwritten rules” aspiring writers should be aware of. This panel discussion will focus on some of the things agents, editors, and publishers do not want to see in a manuscript.
Sunday 3:00 – How to Start Your Writing Career
“Just write” is great advice, but will only get you so far. This panel discussion will focus on how to get your finished manuscript out there, either with traditional or independent publishing, as well as covering a few of the basic business and marketing tips for new and aspiring writers.
Hope to see you there, and have a great weekend!
