Should your genre define you?

March 20, 2018 By: Jason Bougger

A lot of experts say new writers should limit themselves to one genre. I disagree. Write everything and don't box yourself in.

One of the most common (and difficult) questions I’m asked is “What do you write?” My answer goes something like this: “Uh…well…stuff…horror, I guess. Maybe sci-f, but not hard sci-fi. And fantasy! But not high fantasy. Urban fantasy? Maybe? But no vampires. Unless it’s horror. But my novel is Young Adult. Kind of paranormal. Only […]

Aliens, Ghosts, and Cryptids (oh my)

February 5, 2018 By: Jason Bougger

A look at my favorite genres to write and a breakdown of how many stories I've written in them.

I thought I’d try something new here. I was doing some brainstorming and after one thing led to another, I got wondering just how many ghost stories have I written. How many about aliens & UFOs? How many about physic phenomena or dreams? The majority of my short stories and my novel include some sort […]

Writing Flash Fiction Makes You A Better Writer

August 24, 2017 By: Jason Bougger

I was going to begin this post with the sentence “I haven’t written much flash fiction,” but I went and counted and see that I’ve published five flash fiction stories, and also have one more scheduled to be published this fall. So actually, nearly one-fourth of my published short stories have been flash fiction. I […]

Why you should attend a book fair (even if you don’t sell any books)

July 17, 2017 By: Jason Bougger

Even if you don't sell any books, you should participate in as many author fairs as possible. Here is why.

Last weekend, local book sellers, authors, and publishers got together to brave the (seemingly) 115 degree Nebraska weather and put on a book festival. It was the Nebraska Book Festival 2017, and it was a really cool event, even with the terrible heat. I attended and was stationed at the Nebraska Writers Guild table. We […]

The most used words in my novels

July 12, 2017 By: Jason Bougger

Looking at which words show up the most in two of my books.

The other day I told someone an submission editor at a place I sent something to counted the number of “that”s on the first page and included that in the rejection now. I just remembered that I was wrong. The word he counted was “was”. And the number was 34. Even in this small post […]

My first author talk (Also: embrace your local writing and art scene)

April 24, 2017 By: Jason Bougger

A few thoughts from my first author talk

On Sunday I had my first solo author talk. I spoke on the business of writing at Red Path Gallery & Tasting Room in Seward, NE. My previous speaking engagements had been limited to sitting on panels at a few science fiction conventions, where I had a least one other author to share the spotlight […]
