Writing, Running, Rebuilding

January 2, 2019 By: Jason Bougger

Looking at my current projects and plans for 2019.

It’s been a great 2019 so far. Sure, we’re just one day in, but it was a damn fine, productive day. With both the wife and I having the day off, we took turns keeping the kids occupied while the other worked on their stuff. Even got out of the house and took the kids to a movie in the evening.

I’m in the midst of getting the instruction booklet written for 52 Dragons, and I’ve got to say, it’s one of the most difficult writing tasks I’ve done so far. And you’d think this wouldn’t be so bad; I do stuff like this for the day job all the time, but I guess writing software installation notes is a little different than packing a card game manual into a 2.5 x 3.5 20 page insert.

On to other stuff, we all know I’m not in the shape I was in the early 2000s. (That was the before-married Jason, where I’d spend 90 minutes a day in the gym.) Still I had at least tried to to minimum upkeep off an on over the years, even with all the kids. But after the accident messed up my shoulder and then other things (old age, I suppose) messed up my knee, back, and wrists, I just kind of stopped working out in the last couple of years. Unless physical therapy counts.

Either way, I did start doing a 20-minute workout from home and have hit 4 of the last 5 days. So I’m hoping this will work out for me. I hate to keep using parenthood as a crutch, and I am determined to sneak this short workout in most days, as long as I don’t injure anything else.

And on the writing side of things, last night I did something somewhat unexpected. I logged into Duotrope and started looking for places to submit short stories. It’s been forever since I’ve had anything published, and I’m starting to feel like a pretender again. So I sent off two of my unpublished pieces to a couple of respectable markets. We’ll see what that goes. I’ve only got four unpublished finished pieces, so once I have all of them out under review, I’m planning to go into that ugly unfinished folder and pick out some stuff to finish.

The one thing I do know, however, is that the card game will earn the highest priority for the first quarter of the year, and I don’t plan on working on any novels in 2019. So I’m hoping to get a good handful of short stories done. It would be great to snag a few more publishing credits this year and close out 2019 with at least 10 more in the “shopping around” phase.

So…that is how I’m starting off 2019. I hope you’ve got a lot of great things planned for the year. Have a great year and I’ll be back soon!
